Alternative Therapy: Massages

For those of you that do not believe in traditional medication, or for those that simply wish to try something unique, massages are a great form of physiotherapy that aids your brain, body, and soul. Here are a list of different types of massage therapy techniques, with their specific benefits:

Swedish Massage Therapy

Swedish massages are among the most popular massages in Western culture. Swedish massages are a great way to introduce yourself to the culture because they are not painful, like deep muscle massages, but they still allow you to reap the benefits. Swedish massages incorporate a plethora of essential oils and attack the superficial layers of muscles to relieve pain and work out knots.

Deep Tissue Massage

The most noticeable difference between a Swedish massage and a deep tissue massage is the fact that a deep tissue massage allows the therapist to apply pressure to your connective tissue. This can cause pain in the moment, but is proven to relieve shooting pain in the long run. Deep tissue massages also aid your posture and can be used in addition to or in lieu of physical therapy for a muscle injury.

Hot Stone Massage

A hot stone massage is exactly what it sounds like, a massage using warmed stones. The smooth, heated stones allow for muscle relaxation without any pressure being applied directly to your muscles. Your therapist can apply pressure to the stones and use them to work a bit deeper into your muscles if you so choose.

Reflexology

Reflexology is a foot massage where your therapist will apply pressure to very specific points in your foot that correspond to various organs in your body. If you have a job where you stand for extended periods of time, reflexology can relieve that pain.

Sports Massage

The name sports massages can be misleading, because very frequently, they are not used expressly for athletes. Opposed to the other massage techniques, a sports massage is not strictly for relaxation and pain relief, but rather prevention of injuries to muscles you use frequently in daily life. Depending upon your clinic, sports massage therapists can also combine the massage with different stretches and yoga poses. Sports massages can also be used alongside physical therapy.

Thai Massage

Thai massage is one of the more spiritual massages because it focuses on aligning your chakras through gentle pressure on the skin and a variety of different stretches.
